Author Topic: Blockland Data Transfer - Servers  (Read 569 times)

I suffer, for now, from the curse of a 5GB internet data transfer limit each month and am always having to pay extra due to the amount I use the internet...and that's a lot.

It came to my attention a while ago that a large server full of people would drain tirelessly on any transfer limit, and at one point on my own server I managed to use up 100MB in less than an hour and it's never been exactly crowded. Given that a single month is over 700 hours that cost a bit =P.

So my question is, for an average server, how much data is transferred per minute, per hour or whatever? With this nice bit of info I could start hosting a server again perhaps in the knowledge that I won't have to pay for 7-hour-a-day playing time; Perhaps.

Dude, 5GB?  Comcast lowered its limit to 250 GB.

You can probably find this out, assuming you have windows, by leaving the networking control open and monitoring useage.

Countries other than Japan and USA have quite low data caps. I have to pay $15 for 10gb of data, and stuffty upload speeds, until Fiber comes to NZ in 2019 (sigh).

Made a mistake. Meant to say "I have to pay $15 for 10gb of data, and put up with stuffty upload speeds". $15 isn't the entire cost of my internet, about $90 is, plus the extra $15 everytime I go over 10gb.

You need a new internet provider.

I live in the United Kingdom, one of the worlds least-efficient internet providers, excluding most of the developing world.

I shall  do what you said Nexus. Thanks.

As for the limit thing, well, I'm planning to upgrade to a fibre-optic line as soon as the phone contract ends, and after than it still only gives 40GB a month.

Wow, I suddenly feel better.
I have to pay Approx $20 and only $3 more for over-time.

Ok, loading on a joined internet game took up 5000 packets, or about 5MB. That's nice...

I'm guessing you use BT then, unlucky.

The amount of data transfer a server uses will vary heavily depending on how many players join, how many bricks there are and a bunch of other things. It's going to be pretty hard to estimate accurately.
