Author Topic: I'm going to build a gaming rig!  (Read 2092 times)

/title

Now, the only problem is I don't know where to start. Give me some suggestions and just the basic components needed. I would like to be able to run newer games fairly well and older games flawlessly. That means relatively nice/new.

Yes I am practically computer illiterate, but I plan on learning as I go.

My budget is around 1.5 to 2k USD, and I plan to start browsing newegg looking for parts.

Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated!

If you're building a rig for gaming Linux is a no-go. You're going to have to use Windows if you want a gaming rig, lest be bugged by buggy programs that have poor performance due to having to use Wine.
With a 1.5k - 2k budget you can get a very nice computer, by my standards. Generally you don't even need to spend more than 1k, but you should have someone else pick out parts other than me.

My problem with windows is the kernel hasn't been changed since the beginning, the OS takes up 2 gigs just to run, and all that trial bullstuff will slow it down even more. And even then, the viruses and other stuff...

I will consider all options though.

I have exactly Vagabond's problem, except far smaller budget and I'm only considering making one. My brother has a bunch of CPU magazines with him, so I might know a tiny bit more.

Edit: Ignore that crossed-out part entirely.

If you want to play games you'll have to deal with it.

Even old games run like stuff through a windows emulator so Linux is out of the equation.

It sounds like you just need a rig that can handle today's games decently. If that's the case than you'll probably end up spending about $900.
And for someone who mentions become computer illiterate you seem to act like you know alot about windows.

I use Windows 7 x64 with 6GB of RAM, three 2GB 1600 MHz in triple channel.  In English, it's fast.  Windows maybe uses up hardly 20% of the RAM, roughly 1.2GB.  It will use more the more RAM you have.  If you have 8GB, it would probably use roughly 1.5GB.  Likewise when I had 4GB, it used maybe 1GB itself.  Windows uses RAM, its well known but it won't bring you to a crawl when gaming.  I've played games like Minecraft that practically whore up RAM and my system will continue flowing nicely.

Trial software is only included on pre-built included versions of Windows.  If you buy a copy of Windows from NewEgg, it'll be straight from Microsoft.  No trials, no bullstuff.  This is called "Original Equipment Manufacturer", and it means that it is untouched from Microsoft to you, unlike other companies that modify the copies they sell to include their brand name, links to support lines and stupid trial bullstuff that will slow it down.

Viruses can only happen if you're absolutely stupid.  Considering you navigate the internet quite often, I don't think this is exactly a huge problem.

That being said, would you still like to stick with Windows 7?

Also, do you want a new;
  • Monitor
  • Speakers/Headset
  • Keyboard/Mouse
  • Any other parts you may want to carry over?

I'm better off than most non-internet people; but compared to internet people, I'm below par.

Edit: I found a decent deal for Windows 7 on newegg already so yes. New monitor, speakers, and mouse/keyboard. I'm not to big on mics. I am building this from scratch.

Ok, so you have a copy of Windows 7 then to choose?  Can you link me?

I'm also building this with a max budget of 2k USD on newegg.
It's only 100 USD.

That's just windows home though. I'm not sure if professional would be better or not.

Edit: Thanks for the list, I'll check them out.

If you have a full $2k to spend, go for two of those graphics cards and not one.  It's up to you what version of Windows you want.

I personally got Ultimate through my dad and his connections for free, pretty much.

Same price lol. Oh well, it'll have to do. Most of those are probably what I'll use as well, they all seem like the best stuff and decent pricing. Thanks for your help.

Forgot to mention this, but that monitor comes with speakers.

No problem.  Should you run into any problems feel free to let me know.

The parts are pretty high-end, you should run a lot a games at high settings.

Monitor speakers generally suck.  Case in point; my monitor speakers.  They sound very hollow compared to my real speakers.

You don't have to use them.

I didn't know that. Thank you again.
