I made a rather basic OC that didn't seem too insane. I hardly even tried.

Still got criticized.

Yeah because for a fandom for love and tolerance we sure are quick to shoot down anyone who isn't instantly a perfect artist. Absolutely ridiculous. It's just as bad as people shutting down those tumblr's because it was something they didn't like.

Edit: I don't want to be angry with you two but this is an absolute farce. You critique art. All art. You don't bitch and moan because someone tried to broaden their horizons and get better.

So you're saying that people aren't allowed to imagine their own character right? Because it's too generic or it doesn't fit your vision of what an OC should be? Alright.

So how does their OC effect you in any way? Does it come and molest you in your sleep with it's red and black mane or something? Is it the fact that people just want their own vision of themselves to be successful(at least loveually) or they want to look badass, which they could never do in RL?

Okay, don't offer up any reasonable basis for your hate. That's cool.

It's how someone wants to see themselves. Crying because it's an alicorn or because the colors or back-story are garish is a waste of your time and theirs. You could have actually helped them out but nah, you just said it was generic stuff and didn't give a fellow artist a chance.

It's 1 am and you don't care enough to not be a jackass about OC's. Ain't nobody got time for this.

regulith I see where you're coming from on this but honestly I think aeris has a point. if you don't like OCs then just ignore them. I'm not saying I like them either but hey, let people have their fun. sure it might look terrible to the rest of us but as long as the creator's having fun then it shouldn't matter to us at all. as long as they're not trying to shove it down other peoples' throats, I don't see the problem.

I only really hate the ones who try to pair theirs and one of the mane 6 together then go all "DON'T YOU TOUCH MY WAIFU!"

Ex: Skywind, Skateatons OC, Asabilefs OC, and a lot of custom ponies in fanfics.

In my opinion, every OC is fine. Whether it has a crap-load of features, looks really simple like the characters in the show, or has colours that others find disgusting, nothing's wrong with them at all.

The only time when I start to think otherwise is when they make art/fan-fics of them loving one of the show's characters.

well i don't necessarily hate "original" characters
most of them have rather terrible designs/characteristics and are used in unappealing situations though

a couple artists do them quite nicely

also the whole skywind thing has always been an amusing overreaction

I was actually thinking that since both of you are decent artists you'd critique it some even if you are hating on it.

on the rare occasion that i actually do critique someones work, it's not something i hate and i wouldn't openly hate on it.
i just give simple thoughts on what i think is wrong with the picture (example: the horn looks like a balloon)
