I'm looking at these two photos, the first is Halo 3 and the second is Reach. It's a little bit better to me.

Yeah but the textures are higher resolution and get more complicated the closer you get to them and then compress only when you're far away. Halo 3 had the same texture resolution no matter what, so walking straight up to a wall meant your screen was filled with a muddle, low-rez texture. It's a lot of little things like that.
