I never knew Iban was a brony :O
I don't understand this pony stuff. Someone try to explain this.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a show created by Lauren Faust that aired October 10th, 2010. Targeted for little girls and their parents, the show follows the young unicorn Twilight Sparkle as she learns about the many aspects of friendship with her newfound friends of Ponyville. This show became popular after users of 4Chan's /co/ bombarded an article that was negatively discussing how cartoons were, basically, terrible. This article mentioned Friendship is Magic mostly, and because of this users of /co/ began to watch it. Many found this new style of My Little Pony to be my more entertaining than the previous generations and all-around a decent show, and began to spread news of the new show all around 4Chan.Now the show has become an internet sensation, spawning many different fan-made content. Fans have generally designated themselves as "Bronies", or "Brony" in singular-form, as a pun off the word "pony".
One of the things Bronies are quick to point out are the various high quality aspects of the show. It's true that the show is very good, but that doesn't totally explain the phenomenon. Personally I think there are three aspects that make it different.1. It's better than it should be. Shows like this are half hour toy commercials. They don't need to be good. The primary target audience can't really tell if it's good. If it's not absolutely terrible it will do everything the people paying the bills want it to do. Lauren Faust gets a lot of well deserved credit for making something good for the sake of making something good. She also had the help of several other talented writers, animators, artists, musicians, etc. that also deserve a lot of credit. Creating something good is good. Creating something good when you're confined to a genre and target age groups that should guarantee making something awful is genuinely noteworthy.2. It became a successful meme. Places like the /co/ board on 4chan invented things like Derpy Hooves and other silly pony stuff. Derpy and other things then got remixed and remade into other things over and over. Social momentum picked up and lots of people wanted to join in on the fun so they watch a few episodes and get hooked due to the aforementioned quality that is both high and surprising. Know your meme has a good entry on this. http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic3. A community developed. Equestria Daily, /r/mylittlepony, Ponychan, PMVs(Pony Music Videos) on YouTube and a thousand invasions of other related sites all create a sense of community and legitimacy for the subculture. By this point there are enough bronies that they can feed off one another and create several spinoff submemes thus cementing their place in the fabric of internet culture. Time will tell if it's here to stay, but it certainly could be if they keep releasing new seasons at the same high quality level while including the occasional wink and a nod to the Brony community like they did in the Equestria Girls commercial. In short it isn't just good, it is surprisingly good. Some people noticed and started having some fun. More people wanted to join in. Wash rinse repeat.
and then for the sake of humor:-CalvinandHobbessnip-there is also the "Overview / About" section on OP, which may or may not be of use.
Is that real?
Fifteen young men in this hotbed of activism gathered at an Indian restaurant on a recent Sunday and made an appeal: Could the waiter please switch the TV from the news to "My Little Pony"? Then the men heaped their plates with curry and clustered around tables to absorb the Pony cartoon, share trivia about the characters and play show-and-tell with the various plastic Pony toys they had brought along.
blastdown seems to always be the one to explain things so clearly without bias and tons of support.kudos
