Cartoon wasn't that bad, I'm talking about the movie. Optimus dies at like the beginning and the handicapped transformer that acts like he's 16 becomes the main character. I didn't like that guy, and they made Megatron seem super badass up until the end of the movie when he becomes a pusillanimous individual.

But on the other hand, this happened. So it wasn't all bad.
Also, the 1980s cartoon (and movie by extension) were literally around only to sell toys. They killed off a bunch of characters so new toys could be brought in.
