I disagree.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders are referred as fillies (fillies are <4 year-old females) in many episodes they appear in.
The main characters, as well as practically every other pony, are much older than these youngsters. In a technical stance, they would be mares (females 4> years). They are only referred as "my little ponies" when it comes to names, by the princess.
