I know he's been doing this for a long time but my theory is he earns royalties from his deviant artwork (you can earn money from people buying prints of your artwork) but even that isn't enough to sustain him so I think he does commercial commisions for companies and people without having an employer also what you said.
I completely misread the other post, haha.
I believe he draws for a furry research website and makes money off that (this is just something I heard, I have no idea if it's true), he probably also makes some money off commissions and whatnot through deviantArt, though if I had to guess he probably works a normal job as well.
