Jayson Thiessen confirmed that Derpy was voiced by Tabitha St. Germain, by the way. I had a feeling it was either Ashleigh Ball (Rainbow Dash and Applejack) or her.

For those who don't already know, Tabitha also voices Rarity/Granny Smith/Luna/Photo Finish/Mrs. Cake/Pound Cake.

isn't there a stuffload of legal issues regarding using a fan name in the show? you can't reasonably prove who owns the name, and considering it also might be psuedo-public domain, that gives knock-off toy makers more leeway

This is why you'll NEVER see them base an off a fanfic or use a character from a fanfic. (unless it's a coincidence).
