if you're talking about from Season One's pilot to Luna Eclipsed, Lauren Faust said the reason she appeared as she did in the pilot was because she lost all of her magic. Magicless = no flowing magical mane, brighter colors, etc, almost like being ill. once she recovered by Luna Eclipsed, she was back to her original self.

not an age thing, just a magic thing. i dunno lol

Honestly, I'd love to see more of Luna. I've recently been thinking about ideas for some stuff.
What if instead of it being your regular characters to learn a lesson about friendship, Celestia learned something she'd never thought of before? Just an idea. Just mainly one of the characters like Celestia or Luna learning about friendship.
Which I believe according to the first episode, Luna had already learned something about friendship.
