Admitting to watching MLP to your friends and family is like coming out of the closet.
I never directly admitted it..
I was at a camp last summer, and I was sleeping in a tent with my soon-to-be girlfriend, her friend and the dumbass. We were talking about things we liked to look at or something, and I jokingly mentioned "ponies". After I stated that I watched the show (they did ask me if I was serious), the dumbass asked me to say the names of the main characters. After I mentioned 3 of them they laughed, and the next day I found out that the dumbass had told every loving person at the camp about it, so those last few days there was like hell.
My friends have found out about it themselves; Steam avatars, browsing EqD in class etc. and they're, as I said, completely fine with it.
