i don't see how different a "real drop shadow" could be from, as an example, my avatar, other than being offset a couple pixels down and right and maybe without blur.

is this the kind of "real drop shadow" you speak of? because the "black glow" is basically a drop shadow with a larger radius and zero offset.

no, okay, I see why we're on two different pages here. a drop shadow never has "blur," it has "size." the black glow around your avatar is just that, a black glow. it's not a drop shadow because 1. it isn't actually functioning like a shadow, and 2. it has blur. additionally, drop shadows are offset by definition. you'll never see a drop shadow that isn't offset by at least 1 pixel. the glow around your avatar isn't offset at all, it's centered.

my avatar's glow was added to create the illusion that it is a separate entity from the page, that it's "popping out" if you will. it does this due to the fact that the glow makes itself appear as a shadow.

if you were to create sort of a lighting engine to simulate the drop shadow effects of elements and you positioned the source directly above the object, would the darkness around the object suddenly not become a shadow anymore?

again, it's a shadow with zero offset. it looks like a shadow so calling it a "black glow" would be stupid, haha.

What's with Tammy taking a big stuff over the topic?

I can't believe you two even have enough to argue over.  Still, humorous to watch.

OH BOY HERE WE GO.
is it bad that I keep hearing this in dexter's voice?

k w/e I'm done arguing this. case in point, if I wanted to replicate your avatar, I wouldn't use a drop shadow to do so, I would use an outer glow of color #000000 with a size of, what is that, like, 3 or 4 pixels? if you'd like to debate this more, either PM me or wait for the next time I'm on Skype.

Or in MakWorld, it's the fadey outliney bit thingamajig. With stuff added. You make it by using the fade-o-matic filtering bit, then use the boxy selecting thing to destroy the middle bits with the death key. Then draw in the eyes with the pointy dot stick tool.
Yeah... You can tell how well my brain works :/
