As for my theory: (Btw I had about 2 hours of sleep last night so if this sounds odd just keep that in mind)

Judging from the wiki page, they never fully stated that Starswirl was a pony but that he was really powerful and he created lots of spells and whatnot, so since Discord is powerful and he seems like he wants to forget everything over for everyone I think that at some point something made him turn evil.
