it's always a wait-and-see approach, and make many comments about it on the way (e.g., flip stuff and then reverse course later). as information was revealed, opinions changed. many were going to check it out for the hell of it anyway, and some of that information made it seem possible that it wouldn't be as terrible as initially thought so many others went over to the maybe-side too.
end result, it was apparently not as terrible but not really that good either. mildly entertaining ("bland" is the word i've heard most used). freaked out over nothing.
this has happened before, it shouldn't even be surprising
