Author Topic: Can I host a server?  (Read 711 times)

Is there a way to tell if I can host a server besides having someone try to join it?  I know that when some people host its very laggy or you cant even connect.

The reason why theres lag Is one or more of the following

1.Your Router is bad
2.Their Router is bad
3.Their Ports are unforwarded
4.Your firewall is blocking blockland.exe
5.Their Firewall is blocking blockland.exe [thus blocking the inbound network traffic for their server]
6.They live in iraq or something :D [Living this far away causes ping spikes, If your a noob like my mom is your clue less on what im talking about. Ping is how long it takes for the packet to go from one peer to the other.]

-snip-
I dont think lag will be a problem because I don't think any of the things you said are my computer.

This happened to me on BlockCop's server. I joined and it was really laggy for no reason and apparently I was making the lag?

And ya you could host a server and put the maxplayers to 1 so nobody could join.

You don't actually need to.

Some people still do :( Badspotdidn't make a default port so people didn't need to know what Port-forwarding is derp :/

28000?

I guess I just want it to be so we don't have to portforward.

The major causes of lag are bad internet connection and lack of RAM on the server computer, especially with more blocks.
As long as you don't have an extremely slow internet connection or an older computer, you should be fine. There really is no way to predict how well you will be able to host.

The only practical way of this happening (UPnP) is already implemented. It just depends on if your router supports it or not.

No edit : to answer OP's question, with a simple google search for something like 'port checker' you can find a tool that will tell you if your ports are opened. If the tool says they're opened, in most cases people will be able to join. You'll still need to be hosting a server or have some service listening on the port for the port checker to work though.

From there it's just a matter of whether your internet connection and computer can handle a decent amount of players.

I can't imagine that your router was have very much of an impact on that at all. It's all your ISP and what the give you.
