He couldn't handle training and was a fat forget and couldn't do anything for himself. So he decided that he was better off just killing himself than lagging the squad behind in real combat. This movie was actually an anti-war movie.

Ahhh, what a great movie! You didn't by any chance get the inspiration to watch the movie from the LTA movie club? :P
Anyways, if you want to watch more epic movies from the Vietnam war, I strongly suggest:
Platoon (especially this one)
Apocalypse Now

Full Metal Jacket is kinda like two movies in one. The first half is about the bootcamp, which is kinda funny. The second half is about the war itself, which is much more serious and sad. I like both parts.
