Xbox Live is a great way to talk to and meet new people. When you have alot of good friends on your Friends List, you always have a fun time. I have about 5 people that I always, always, always play with/talk to. But be careful, some older games that arent monitered by Xbox Live Moderators are crawling with hackers, such as Call of Duty 5: World at War. Every other game you join, someone will have mods (it says they have Godmode and Noclip on your screen) and be a richard.

Other than that, playing Xbox Live is very worth it. Make sure you get a Mature account, or you'll be left out on alot of things, like Facebook, Zune, and Netflix (you need a Netflix account to use it). I made that mistake while getting it because I didnt think I would need to wait until I'm loving 17 to use stuff like that.

But yeah, it's great. Have fun.

It costs money for XBOX LIVE. I don't remember how much  but there is also online currency you can buy DLC's with and demos. Also not all games have to be played in multiplayer.

You can pay over the xbox, or go to your loacal indian store owner (7-11) and buy a xbox live card. They can range from 3 months to a year.

I don't ever buy the 12 months.

The only time I have seen hackers is in the stuffty CoD franchise. I'm not band wagoning but If you think about it, every game is the same as the last one.

They constantly have discounts on Live. You have a free one month trial when you activate your Xbox but you have to pay from then on. Its not uncommon to see sales occasionally claiming Live is like $3 a month if you buy it for one month then, though I'm sure they make you extend it or something.
