How the forget do you even get 2?

pemdas sounds dumb

pedmas all the way  :cookieMonster:

How the forget do you even get 2?

this. seriously.

it all really depends on how youre writing it. if youre writing it with the 2(9+3) all in the denominator it's 2. otherwise 288. OP is unclear.

order of operations you hick.

There's only one way to do a problem.

If it was all in the denominator it would be (2(9+3))

48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)
48/2x12
48/24
=
2

Parentheses - In this case, 9+3 being in the parentheses means you add these together first.
Exponents - Skip this, as there are no exponents involved.
Multiplication - After adding 9+3, you'll see that the denominator has become 2(12). Multiply these together, and your result is 24.
Division - Now the fraction has become 48/24, which is simply 2.

Subtraction

Although, seeing this problem typed in this way can cause confusion.

48/2(9+3) can mean 48 divided by the product of 2 times the sum of 9 + 3.
or
48/2(9+3) can mean the quotient of 48 and 2 times the sum of 9 + 3.

I just happen to see it as the first possibility.

They for some reason took 24(12) as a division problem and got 2 instead of multiplying.

I hate math and I got it right. <shades>

Fred, there's only one order of operations. If you do it wrong, its wrong.

I found my error.

I should remember PEMDAS like I did in 6th grade.

if it was all in the denominator it would be 48/[2(9+3)]

note the additional brackets. 288 is correct.

You go left to right dumbass

48/2 goes before 2*12

its 288 as I said before

furthermore if you entered this as code or something or calculator yeah

yes that is why i said OP is unclear, not all calculators would require the extra brackets.

..because they would do order of operations for you and you'd get 288

derp

also this stuff is all over /b/ every day

If we wrote it your way, Fredulus, it would be 48/(2(9+3)).
