connection via wifi is actually more accurate than GPS.
if I use a wifi signal and Google maps on my phone its within a two foot error radius
Yes, it can be more accurate than GPS. However, this requires that it can actually determine your location, which in turn requires an accurate database of AP locations, which isn't always the case. In other words, in can work great in big cities, but if you go out on the countryside it's actually very probable that it can't determine your location at all.
Such a loving scam. People hardly use their laptops let alone have it stolen.

I, as well as several IRL friends,
only have laptops.
Also, I'd say that people who have divorced parents and/or have relatives living far away are probably quite probable to also be in this group, or at least have and regularly use one.
As for the latter part, laptops are made for used when travelling, and I'd actually dare to say that the items you travel with are at a bigger risk than the stuff which is in your home 24/7.
Not to mention how much more of a hassle it is to actually steal a stationary computer.
I got my computer stolen once.So in other words, I'd like to dismiss your reasons as invalid.
