Author Topic: Radeon 6870 HD or 6950 HD?  (Read 775 times)

Which one is better? I'm asking because I'm not sure the 100 dollar price difference between the 6870 and 6950 is worth it.

The Radeon 6950 will give ~20 more FPS compared to the 6870.  The 6950 uses more power, but I think it's worth it.

The 6950 is a better card, but not by too much. Getting the cheaper card would probably be a better idea.

A 6870 will play anything out there as long as you dont use too much AA (there is a different AA setting in catalyst which is much faster and still looks good, but it can cause artifacts on some applications such as the minecraft launcher).
However if you want to future proof a tad more or you have some extra money with nothing else to spend it on go for the 6950

Whats the maximum AA a 6870 can use without hindering performance?

Totally depends on your resolution. Also I don't own the card myself, but I do own an OC'd 6850 which is very close to the 6870.

Well any time you use AA you're going to lower performance, significant or not, but I use 4 and it looks good on a 1440x900 resolution. The higher your resolution, the lower you can put your AA on.

EDIT: And yeah, just overclock the 6870 or use AMD Overdrive to bump up the clock and get better performance.

I'd just build one its like really easy to do and over the years you'l collect more parts and you can update your computer when you wish all of our computers were built from nothing but the motherboard.

HE IS BUILDING HIS OWN COMP, HE IS LOOKING FOR A GRAPHICS CARD FOR IT.
Unless you actually meant build a graphics card, then he'd need VERY EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT.

My bad calm down.

Yea, I'm  building my comp. If you want to see a list of full parts:

My GFX card listed there is the 6950, but I'm sketchy on it.

My resolution will be 1440x900.

Is 4x AA all right, or do you need more for everything to look good? If so I'll go with the 6870, if not, maybe 6950. But, I'll try seeing overclocking the 6870

At only 1440x900 both should be able to easily run x8 or even higher on most recent games. You might as well spend the extra $10 (with rebate) for the 6950 although you most likely won't see a difference in performance because you resolution is so low. Just incase you might later on move onto a monitor that runs at a higher resolution.

It's not a 10 dollar difference:

It's like a 50 dollar one, with rebates.

You may as well get the 6950.
