DoublePostObsidiBump.

I want obsidian counters for my kitchen when I grow up.

nice job loving ignoring my edit.
Four minutes. He was probably typing while you edited your post.

You play too much minecraft.
Obsidian is quite a fragile material. It can be sharpened down quite easily, and is nowhere near as strong as diamond. It's actually about has fragile as glass. Considering it IS glass.
Obsidian is almost as sharp as diamond, though. And diamond itself is fairly brittle.

EDIT: Was completely wrong about Obsidian. But I'm right about diamonds.

How is it brittle if it's the hardest material in the world?

Hardest on the Mohs scale. Meaning it can be sharpened incredibly, and it is nigh impossible to scratch.
"a diamond is brittle, and can crack under the shock of a sudden, sharp blow."
-Some diamond website.

"that diamond website is wrong"
-some other website

Wikipedia also says it, as do numerous other websites, and y'know, scientists.

yeah well I'm a scientist so

Not a very good one, apparently.

Anyway, sorry for kinda de-railing, because I like the idea of a Butterfly Knife reskin.

you need another diamond though

Not to shatter it. To cut it, yes. But not to break it.

I believe it is possible to cut diamonds with lasers.
Obsidian is not the hardest, just pretty much the most tolerant of insane sharpness. Obsidian can get so sharp that the point is almost molecular. That is why it is used for scalpels and was used in the past for arrowtips and such.

To break diamond you use wood. Got it.

I was thinking more along the lines of steel. As in a hammer.

EDIT: Katadeus, yes, it's completely possible to cut with lasers, you are correct.
