China is just hitting it's own industrial revolution a good 100 years behind the US. It's economic bubble, like Japan's old economic bubble, will collapse in a matter of decades.

I thought china had a terrible gdp, and it also couldn't sustain feeding its population due to the stuffty climate of a good chunk of it

Most of the population is situation towards the east coast, where the economy has boosted over the past years. But like I said, within the matter of decades they'll find themselves exactly where Japan is right now.
