Author Topic: Space Talk (Animated Series)  (Read 3080 times)

So a while ago Swholli and I made a little short about 2 lego guys floating around in space and talking about Wavy Lays (you can see it here). I had a lego man rig that I wanted to try out for a short, that's why I didn't use blockheads. Although recently we decided we should continue these as a series, but with blockhead characters. We wanna carry on the idea of these two characters just chatting about nonsense in space but make it a little more interesting. For example we want to have them visit different places in the universe and go on crazy adventures perhaps. Last time all I did for the animation was animate them waving their arms and just loop the clips, but I've learned much more since then.

I'm posting here though because we can't do this alone, and if anybody is interested in helping just post here or pm us. Some of the positions we are looking to fill are writers, voice actors, modelers and animators. Everything else (such as rendering and editing) me and Swholli got covered.

If you wanna apply for voice acting or writing, just pm either me or Swholli on the forum and we'll tell you further details. If you wish to apply for something like modeling or animating, just post or pm us a picture or video of models or animations you've made. I know we have TONS of modelers on this forum, but not too many animators. If you've done 2D animation in the past and you think you wanna try out for 3D by all means do it, because it'll be much easier for you to grasp it. If you haven't done any animation in the past but you still wanna apply, you're welcome to. I can teach anybody who really wishes to get into animation and help us out, because we really need more animators.

So yeah, I think this would be really awesome if we could actually organize a team of people, and we would get much more content out much more quickly. Also, I know a lot of people on this forum are great modelers but there's no guarantee you'll get a spot as a modeler just because you're good, because I don't wanna have 20 modelers and like 2 animators. We should have a balanced number of positions here. If you're applying for modeler though, just give us/post here your best models, don't spam and post your entire collection lol. It's quality over quantity here.

i'd like to learn animation
i could also write

Yes.

I might try out for writing. If a writer is accepted, what will happen to the others. Will they all collaborate or will one do one episode, one do another?

So basically, to apply for writing it's as simple as that, say you want to be a writer. Easy. Now, your level of creativity is still going to be judged, so this is how the process will go:

First, think of an interesting idea or plot and some funny gags to go along with the characters. Come up with a general two to five sentence summary of what you'd like to see happen in the episode and include some jokes you think would fit. Pitch those ideas to myself or Dark through a PM, or what have you, and we'll tell you if we like it or not. If it gets the thumbs up from both of us, you're free to flesh it out into a full fledged script and send it back.

Now, with the script in hand, Dark and I will read it and possibly talk to you about it, things we'd like to change or add or subtract. When you and Dark and I have finally come to a conclusion on the solidity of the script in question, it'll be left to me and the voice team/Dark and the animation team to bring your words to the screen.

We've decided on taking the traditional "cartoon" route with the production. So think no more than about 11 minutes in length. It can be longer or it can be shorter (i.e. two part episodes or shorts) but the 11 minute mark is pretty much where it should be. Also, to think in terms of how long your script is, the estimation they make in Hollywood is: a page of dialog is roughly 1 minute of screen time, and a page of action is up to determination of the director. So if you want to write a whole page of action and say that it should fill a whole minute, then make sure to include that, otherwise write roughly 9 pages of dialog spliced with 3 page of action (or really any combination of the two) to get a feel for your episode being in the correct length.

Other than all of that, you're basically free to do whatever you want. Think like you're writing a cartoon, and then write a cartoon.

I'm currently updating my minifig rig, once I'm done it'll put a link to it so anybody who wants it can play around with it. If you want the current one the link is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?iez9432vde21ekk

So how applying for animation is going to work is just pm me how much experience you have already, and I'll see how I can get you up to speed (but once I'm done the new rig). I'll go through and tell you how you go about starting a shot that we assigned, and also the basic principles. After that's done I'll just make up a shot and a storyboard for it, give it to you and see how you do. I'll answer any questions and such that you have and give feedback to improve the shot.
I think diving into it is the best way.

I'd like to be a voice actor; this seems to be my kind of role.

I remember all those animations you made...good stuff.
But I will certainly try out for writing :U

I would love to voice act but I can't PM.

I want to help in this somehow... but I doubt you'd want a voice actor with a 12 year old voice. And I can't write well.

Also, is there a set personality type for the two blockheads in the animation, or is that for us to come up with?

one is black, IIRC

Watch the first video to get the characters.

Watch the first video to get the characters.
I watched it but I was wondering if he wanted to continue off the old one, or two new sets of characters.
