Author Topic: Science Discussion - Topic: Time Dilation  (Read 6155 times)

This thread is dedicated to the discussion of Scientific theories, paradoxical entities, breakthroughs, phenomenon, and existing scientific facts or happenings.

I will try to change the topic of discussion every couple of days, and try to keep the topic of discussion interesting and thorough. I will also attempt to branch out these topics with certain Sciences, such as Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Biology, etc. etc.

If you have any recommendations for a topic of discussion, seeing as how I am somewhat limited on interesting topics, feel free to send a personal message regarding the topic of discussion and a link to some information on the designated topic.

Today's topic of discussion is of Time Dilation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_dilation

Many theories blend in with Time dilation, and it is a very complex theory. Read up on it.

The basic principles are basic, though. Say you are traveling near the speed of light. Since you are near this speed, time is somewhat compressed. Lets say you travel 10 lights years away from your town, spend 8 months where you are at, and come back. Since you are traveling near the speed of light during all of this, time dilation is in effect.

You come back to your town 20 years in the future.

Because of the time compression and the distance away from the town, time dilation had a major effect over 8 months.

Bump since this is on the fourth page and no one cares that one gram of antimatter equals the power of the Hiroshima explosion.

Isn't antimatter the same thing as dark matter?

hurr bomb go kaboom c:

No. Dark Matter is inferred to exist from gravitational effects on visible matter in space, I believe. In other words, I think it's the dark stuff in space that interacts with heavenly bodies in space. Gravitationally.

Antimatter is also theorized to be used as a fuel source, so no bomb for you yet. >:E

A teaspoon of this wipes out all of New York.
DEVELOP THIS BETTER.

They want this badly because it has a 100% efficient energy output.
It'd be great for spaceships, as it uses little fuel with 100% efficiency.

If they can develop antimatter quickly, we could easily solve energy problems in today's world. I am pretty damn sure it won't come cheap, though, since it takes forever to create enough particles to power whole countries, states, cities even. Like I said, antiprotons are being made at a rate of 107 per minute, given the fact that it's the same size as a real proton. I don't know how they harvest or create the other antiparticles, so to make a particle of this still baffles me. I don't know how they fuse the subatomic antiparticles together...

I wonder how an EMP works.

EMP's have to do with electromagnetic pulses, not antimatter.

That couldn't happen since one particle of antimatter can only destroy 1 matter equivalent since it's destroyed in the process too.

doesnt it also release a stuffton of energy?

Isn't it nearly impossible to sustain a particle of antimatter for longer than a second or something?

The particles, yes. There's an energy output you are ignoring in this equation. Antimatter weaponry is formulated to be trillions times trillions times more powerful than a nuclear weapon at the same level. The mass the weapon destroys is converted into output energy, which is exceedingly powerful, and is repeated until all of the antimatter is consumed.

A teaspoon of antimatter on New York may not wipe it out COMPLETELY, but it sure as hell can destroy most of it.

As soon as the antiparticles hit something, "annihilation" occurs, which is bad. So they keep the antimatter in a Penning trap.
