They don't bother me.
Sometimes I get algebra stuff in them though and it makes me crack up.

They are designed to stop spam bots, and for the most part they do that very well.
Though with the proper knowledge you could write a bot that would be able to read them pretty easily.

fun fact: you only need to get one of the words (always a specific one) right in a captcha

after a while you know how to tell the difference. if there was a "cat doorknob" captcha, and cat was the word, I could enter "cat forgetbabies" and it would still work.
