Well, its 2011 and so far there's half life 2 episode 2, portal 2, Team Fortress 2, and Left 4 Dead 2. Why? Why not 3? That is the question today. So my fellow/Non-fellow blocklanders... Can valve count to 3?

There's 3 (maybe more) HL1 games, though they are not a trilogy or other chronological series;

HL1: Opposing Force

And there's also 3 actualy chronological HL2 games;

HL2: Episode 1
HL2: Episode 2

So yes, Valve can count to three.
