Author Topic: Linux?  (Read 950 times)

I'm headed off to college to start the next phase of my life. This phase included a new laptop, so I needed something to do with my old one. I would like to try out linux on it, but I have no idea where to start. My main function for it would be to host servers (BL, Minecraft, etc.) but I would also like to play games (BL, Minecraft, LoL, TF2, etc.). Anyone have any idea what version of linux I should get? Also, what is some of the basic terminology?

if you want to play games Get Windows. Windows can host Web servers(HTTP) too if you get pro or better(IIS).
Or get Apache and home prediem if you dont want to spend a lot
But if still want to go to Linux chose OpenSUSE 11.4 DVD version

Don't use Linux.

Ubuntu and Linux Mint are good places to start, I can write out a bunch of stuff but I'm eating so give me a minute.

Linux and Windows gaming is an illogical mix. Don't.
Hosting on Linux is good, hosting using software not designed for Linux is a bad one as far as I'm concerned.

I personally recommend OpenSuse if you do go with Linux.

and i thought i was the only one who likes Opensuse on BL

Remember, I still have a brand new windows laptop I plan on using 9 times out of 10. I'm mainly wanting to build a server, but having the option for games would be nice.

oh Than OpenSUSE DVD Version(includes server packages just when your at the curform Screen click details and click packages.) You can play Games on Linux using Wine but you may have glitches with the game

Ok thanks. I'll look into it.

Alright, I'm back.  So here we go;

  • Learn some common terminal commands, you will need it.
  • You can run most Windows games under Wine, but there's no point.  Just dual boot.
  • Get open office.  It's a free clone of Microsoft office.
  • Linux Mint is good if you're coming from Windows to linux.

That's all the pro tips I have atm.

For beginners, I'd reccomend Linux Mint. After you get used to Linux move to Ubuntu and try out games. I've had luck with Blockland, I haven't tried any other of your listen games, though I might when I get a chance. LoL will run on basically anything, so don't worry about specs. Same goes for TF2. If it can run HL2 or another source game, you'll be fine.

Me too. :D

Screw Ubuntu, that is for people who don't bother to look past their doorstep. OpenSuse is so under-appreciated.

Is there anyone on here who really uses Linux as a operating system on their primary computer?

How big a drive does your main lappy have? You could partition it with a Linux OS and sell the old laptop on Craigslist. That' s what my Family Room computer is. 600Gb to windows 400Gb to ubuntu.
