My iPod touch won't turn off?

Well, I just got an iPod touch because my old one was dead and got enough monies, so I'm new to such sort of things.

Anywho, I was browsing forum with it before I went to sleep, pressed the button to turn it "off", and set it on my counter. The battery charge was 95%+

I woke up, turned it on to check emails, and the charge was at around 50%.
I slept for 7 hours.

Do I have to hold the button down longer or something for it to fully turn off?

I didnt even think they turned off. I thought you just lock it and eventually it's in sleep mode and it isnt entirely off but it basically is
