Author Topic: Abnormal GPU fan speeds  (Read 716 times)

My GPU fan is seemingly randomly changing the fan speed by up to 30%, even while idling. It will be sitting at a constant 40% speed, and then for 3 or 4 seconds jump up to about 70%. When gaming it might be running at 60% or so and then jump down to 30-40% for a few seconds.
I'm using the TriXX utility for controlling the fan, however even when I set TriXX to us a fixed speed, or when I completely close TriXX the fan still ranges its speed wildly. When I open Catalyst and disable manual fan control, it re-enables it after a few seconds much like TriXX does when I put it in control, and the problem persists.
I have absolutely no idea what's going on and would appreciate some insight.
The card is a new SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6850 and I've only been noticing this problem today.

Edit:
Also note that I know this isn't a temperature problem, normally the fan is set to scale with temperature, but this is happening regardless of the temperature.

If I were you, I'd use Afterburner to control fan speeds and see if it changes. Set up a manual profile to change it with different temperatures.

Installed Afterburner and right away everything went back to normal. I'm happy it was a simple software problem.
I find it odd though that TriXX decided to break now. I've been using it for a few months without any problems. Thanks though.
