Private industry is quickly outpacing NASA.

I think it's better personally. I mean like NASA did great stuff, but their lack of funding heavily limited them. NASA can really only stick to unmanned missions which can in fact receive even more information than people can, with a lot less risk. I'm glad private companies will be attempting manned flights. They likely have the money to do what they need and not be burdened by the government.

Pretty soon it won't be possible to get 100 miles out of our atmosphere without passing an advertisement for Apple or McDonald's....

Since, you know, when you think space, you think burgers!

On that note, space colonization is completely possible, but it is not going to be happening anytime soon more likely than not. Before we start worrying about space, though, we still have quite a few places to explore here on earth. Like our oceans. :o

Privatizing any government function is a bad idea.

forget no, NASA didnt get shut down. They just aborted the space station, I believe.

NASA would never be shut down with all the stuff going on in the world right now.

Terraforming, as in burning various fuels and changing the atmosphere to fit the needs of humans.

Also, what if in a few years Earth gets forgeted up the ass by a meteor or something else? Will we have another planet to go to? Hell no, because of some black guy in a white house.

loving mondays, first the pakis move into the UK and now this.

No... They didn't "abort" the space station. In fact it was just completed. The MANNED aspect of NASA is over for now. The space shuttle is retired. The Russians still have their spacecraft, and we will use that to get into space.

Eeyup.
Final launch was last month, I believe.

I now hate Obama because of this. :c

What the process of Terraforming a planet would be for living conditions.

>Send some drone over to planet, with the task of creating a "garden" for which plants to grow.
>Wait hundreds of years for enough oxygen to form to create a suitable atmosphere for water and more plants.
>Wait thousands more for the planet to be engulfed with Plants, and ice cubes with bugs in them.
>Send space ships.
>Build small hut like buildings, that are sealed enough so that in the event of something catastrophic, the people will live. Mostly.
>Over the course of hundreds of years, mining and stuff will make more metals, and then the people can buy more units and houses, and advance into the Colonial age.

Let's colonize space and only let smart people in.

But seriously, Mars has CO2 for an atmosphere.  So we can plant trees and come back later.

That would take too long. I think air tight structures that are fed oxygen via an arboretum, or broken down water via electrical currents could supply the oxygen.

Trees require more than CO2, they also need oxygen for respiration, nutrients from the soil, and water.

this, thank god.

Guys Obama didn't shutdown NASA they aren't going to be doing space exploration for a while because we are in a financial stuff hole right now. For now the Chinese will be taking over. But sometime in a long while we may be able to continue space exploration.

I always thought man's goal/purpose in life was to expand their knowledge and go to further places.

the real thing is, nasa wasn't "shut down", but our space program was put on hold. we really need to deal with the stuff at our knees before we want to go find more stuff to dump on our heads.
