Author Topic: ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS  (Read 2539 times)

Just got a nice, fat paycheck of $1000. It's burning a hole in my pocket, so I need to blow some of it on computer stuff. What should I upgrade?

Stats:
Intel Core i7 CPU 930 @ 2.80GHz 2900 Mhz, 4 Cores, 8 Logical Processors
9.00GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
1 x 500GB HD (boot drive)
1 x 1000GB HD
1 x 250GB HD
TOTAL 1750GB HD
Dynex Multimedia Keyboard DX-WKBD Wired Keyboard (old and stuffted up, mind you)
alienware USB mouse (works fine, nothing special)
DUAL Acer 20 inch monitors

Probably don't want to spend more than ~$250, but idk. Also, no "get 1000 $1 dollar hooker" stuff please :V

Before you go all spend-happy.

Filll up your pantry and refriderator.

upgrade your GPU, its the only thing lacking in comparison to the rest

I'm a dumb when it comes to computer hardware. How cheap would a good upgrade be? Which one should I pick?

Explains the hard drive setup.

um. 1 large HD is better then 3 smaller ones.
you gotta power all that stuff you know. and even though a hd isnt much a hog, it adds up.

i say get one 2TB drive.

partition it to;
c: 500gb
d: 1500 gb

buy artificial tits to squeeze from time to time.

Or 1000 $1 hookers
You'd buy out the entire Red Light district!

About the hard drive setup -
I initially had just the boot drive, and when that ran out of space, I decided to get a 1TB HD which I promptly did. That worked really well - until I somehow filled up the entire TB (pr*ahem*on). The little 250 gig HD was ripped violently from an old, non-functional external drive. Turns out the HD itself was fine, so I plugged it in. So yeah, it's not ENTIRELY my stupidity :3

I think the most important question is, where the hell did you get a grand?

I wouldn't waste it on upgrading your PC. It doesn't seem worth it. If you really wanted to upgrade it. just upgrade your GPU everything else seems fine to me.

I would spend your money on other stuff, maybe games? Gift games to people if you like charity, lol. Maybe buy some cool gadgets like uber laser pointer or uber bright flash light that can cook eggs. :)

if you don't need that much harddrive space, I'd say ditch the 500 and 250GB HDD's and get yourself an SSD. use the 1TB for your games and files and stuff, and use the SSD for windows and the like. nobody likes waiting for their OS to boot or important programs to open.

alternatively (since from your last post it seems like you do need the space) you could ditch the 500 and the 250 for another 1TB HDD. see bisjac's post for reasoning to this.

however a good rule with SSD's is this: if you're not sure if you need one, you don't need one. however since you said you have money to burn, why not?

as has been suggested, I also recommend a GPU upgrade. however I need an entire revamp myself so I wouldn't be the guy to ask on what model to buy, maybe Ethan will come into the thread since he seems to know quite a bit about building computers and what parts to choose.

also since your keyboard was "stuffted up" or however you put it, consider investing $100 or so into a nice keyboard with more features than a basic one.

I bought the parts and a monitor for my awesome as hell comp for a little over $1000.
