Author Topic: Computer won't turn off and numerous other problems  (Read 1123 times)

I am not a very technical person and therefore do not know where is a good place to ask this. Google only shows me how to fix it if it won't turn on, so that is not helpful at all.

If I could get some help, at the very least a pointer of where to ask this, it would be much appreciated.

So here's what happens:

  • If I click to shut down the computer, nothing happens. If I wait, the computer will eventually go to sleep for me not doing anything, but it won't turn off.
  • I have to hold the power button down until it turns off by force.
  • When I turn on the computer again, it skips the log in screen and just goes straight to desktop.
  • There is no response to hitting ctrl alt delete either.
  • Logging off, restarting, and all those buttons in the start menu don't work either
  • Full system scan finds nothing
  • Can't do boot scan as I can't even turn off the computer to begin with

Other things:
  • Dell Precision M6500
  • 64bit Windows 7

That is strange. I've never heard anything like that.
As I suggest in every computer problem thread, do a virus scan. I'm not sure what kind of virus would stop you from shutting down the computer but it is worth a check.

Never heard anything like this except with malware. Scan your computer.

Full system scan turned up negative.
I can't run a boot scan as I can't even turn off my computer for the boot  which is to be scanned to commence.

don't want to sound like an idiot, but try a new keyboard?

hey. try putting this into command prompt. (in windows 7, type "cmd" into the search.)

Code: [Select]
shutdown -s
this is strange as forget. this is just another way to shut it down.

A keyboard has no effect on my ability to click a start menu button. Nice try though. Plus I am typing all of this fine. ( cant really remove keyboard anyways as this is a laptop)
(note this is a high end laptop so don't "well there's your problem" this or I will report you for not care posting)

Sounds like a temporary solution so I don't like it as much but I will try it later.

Also microsoft support is complete bullstuff.

Throw it out of the window

-OR-

1. Go to empire state building
2. Go To The Top
3. Throw it off the edge.

Open notepad.
Put
Code: [Select]
shutdown -s into it.
Save it as "Shutdown.bat" on your desktop.
Run it whenever you want to turn off your computer.

I guess you can't boot into safe mode?
On boot, keep on pressing F8 and eventually you will be presented with a screen, which should let you choose Safe Mode.
I suggest running a Malwarebytes scan in Safe Mode.

Even though this is a long taking fix, can't you send in the computer with a list of all the issues, and the people will fix it?

That's an expensive and unneeded way to what could be an easy fix.
That's also a last resort.

unrelated, but when my computer turns on, my keyboard is completely unresponsive until the login screen. :cookieMonster:
