Author Topic: Thinking about a new rig, what are your opinions.  (Read 2212 times)

So ya, I recently got a new desktop with the following specs:
Some Intel X58 MoBo, didn't build it. :D
Intel Core i7 975 3.23 GHz Six Cores 12 MB L3 Cache
6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz RAM
Dual AMD Radeon HD 6950s
1.2 KW Power Supply
1 TB SATA 3GB/s 7,200 RPM Hard Drive (Think it was Seagate Barracuda something or other.)
Some PCIe Wireless Card

The chassis is positively amazing. But, my brother gave me his 14' Laser sailboat. It can go for 2000 easy on lasertrader.org. So I have my 2500 dollar new computer, and am faced with the decision to sell the boat and computer, and build a new computer that has more stuff that I like. Here are the specs I would get:
[Case]COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Advanced RC-932-KKN5-GP Steel ATX Full Tower Compucase Case
[Disc Drive]LITE-ON 24X DVD Writer Black SATA Model iHAS424-98
[HDD]Western Digital VelociRaptor WDBACN6000ANC-NRSN 600GB 10000 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
[GPU]EVGA 03G-P3-1591-AR GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) Hydro Copper 2 3072MB 384-bit GDDR5 (Dual)
[PSU]ENERMAX SGALAXY EVO EGX1250EWT 1250W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Certified
[RAM]G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL8T-12GBRM
[MoBo]EVGA 141-GT-E770-A1 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard
[CPU]Intel Core i7-980 Gulftown 3.33GHz LGA 1366 130W Six-Core Desktop Processor BX80613I7980
[OS SSD]Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive

Warn me if something isn't compatible or if you wanna buy the comp or laser lol.

your  computer is already great, why the hell would you buy another.

use that $2000 for something better.

Sorry, but the only thing better would be 4500$ worth of research or Reese's.

intel hexacores are really expensive and as far as I know still in development .. if I were you I'd wait for something even better to come out.

sell the boat and use it to upgrade your computer when needed
futureproofing a computer is ALWAYS a bad idea

I'm hardpressed on the decision to wait for the radeon 7000 series to come out. But the value of my current computer is always going down. So, sell everything now, build a new one. My 975 is great, so hexacores aren't prototypical. My decision on the CPU is pretty much set.

I'm certainly not saying hexacores are bad or anything - but don't be surprised if it quickly becomes obsolete with a new model. If you do end up waiting for the radeon 7000 series, maybe a better CPU than the one you have your eye on will be out by then.

You aren't even going to sail it once?

I've raced it once. I'm using it a little bit, but I don't have time to juggle swimming, polo, homework, and for recreation I enjoy gaming more. I'll just rent.

Doubal toast: Sorry that last post made me sound illiterate.

so instead of editing it you double posted and spelled "double" wrong
