I tried making it just say "Hi" when a player enters with a two and a half second delay and nobody even noticed it.

I want you to imagine that everybody follows your train of logic, and upon joining a server with 10 players in it the chat log grows ten lines longer every time somebody joins the server. Now imagine it with a 30 player server.
