Clans In Blockland
BROUGHT TO YOU BY AN IDEA THAT EMERGED OUT OF MY BUM

Prologue/Disclaimer

Read this stuff first.

Blockland is a game designed for kids, where you build out of lego-like blocks and you have fun. There are literally no rules of the game, thus it is a "Sandbox" game. Clans are a popular system in Blockland. You must know by reading this thread, and please do remember that the following topics are not required for you to follow in the process of making a clan, these are simply recommendations or suggestions. Anyone can make a clan in any way they want. This is just a few tips and tricks to make your clan fun for everyone. So enjoy, scream at me, I don't care. Just don't take the thread too seriously.

What is a Clan?

Clan /Klan/

Noun.

- A group of close-knit and interrelated families.

A Clan, is a group of people who come together to do awesome stuff, in short. To pinpoint it, a Clan in Blockland is a group of Blockland users who come together, in-game, and make some cool stuff or have fun in a group of specific people. It can range from Building clan, where users build neat structures or designs out of the lego-style bricks in game, they can also be themed off of certain eras or styles in real life. Another example would be an Eventing clan, which is where users come together and utilize the Wrench Events system in Blockland to create interesting sequences and programs combined with bricks in large groups. There are many examples of clans in Blockland. I will explain each style in complete detail below.

Building Clans

Description: A building, or "Construction" clan, is a clan that is completely dedicated to using Blockland's lego-style bricks to construct things such as buildings, objects of any kind, cities, you name it. Building clans were the first ever type of clan to be created on Blockland and they are still the most popular style of clan. Usually building clans are dedicated to building one type of object, or themed to one style based in real life.

Examples: In V7, a clan called USSR built a variety of structures, objects and locations based off of Russian and Ukrainian culture and theme. They were one of the most popular clans in Blockland to ever exist until the rise of V9 when they vanished forever.

Structure: Maintaining structure for a building clan is quite simple. Building clans should support a large amount of members, such as 20-30, because there is far more teamwork involved. Hosting a dedicated server with a "Freebuild" or a dedicated theme build, like a "city build", is recommended. Allow users to show off their building talents in a Freebuild server and accept them into your clan if you like their style and skill in building. Remember, do not base your choice on accepting a member off of their grammar, their Blockland ID, or their nametag or clan tags; if you want to be wise you should choose their acceptance over how good they are at building. A clan topic on the forums is of course, necessary but not required.

Eventing Clans

Description: Eventing Clans are a type of clan where a (typically) smaller number of users on Blockland create sequences, "programs" or designs with Blockland's Wrench Event built-in system. This type of clan is popular for creating "Pixel Computers", a remake of a personal computer within Blockland, that operates completely off of Wrench Events, relays and smaller bricks to create images on it's "screen". Eventing clans are also great for building Click Challenges and story challenges, such as a build where you need to escape a building by clicking around and searching for bricks that activate openings and unlock doors.

Examples: In the rise of V9, the first ever Event-based clan, called "MicroBlock", was popular because of the invention of the pixel computer. MicroBlock served many months along side the clans that trailed behind it, such as Blockintosh, an Apple-themed Event Clan, as well as BlockNux, themed after linux, and shortly after, iEvent. MicroBlock recently has returned to business and is one of the most popular eventing clans on Blockland.

Structure: The key is organisation and activity. Keep your members list low, having too many members in the clan means that certain members will get left out of activities and will become inactive quickly. Because there is not as much to do in an Eventing clan compared to a Building Clan, keep your members list at around 10-15 members only. Think about theming your clan off of a product or company in real life, so that you have an idea of what you'll be creating things after. You can be as creative as you want of course. Make sure to have Event addons like Variable Conditional Events and Zone Events (Those are just examples of some) encase you need to whip out the big guns and do some hardcore stuff. A thread on the forums is, of course, necessary but not required. Get fancy with your layout if you wish.

Addon/Modification Clans

Description: Addon or Modification Clans are clans consisting of a large group of members who build and design objects outside of Blockland, in developer programs, to create addons and modifications for the game. These clans are usually not very prominent ingame, they are commonly grouped together in external programs like Steam, Skype or Windows Live Messenger to communicate about, share and discuss addons. They can come together ingame to test their addons in a central server. These clans usually release addons in one large thread titled under their clan's name.

Examples: There was a clan back in V8 owned by NiXXiL that was really good with addons but I can't recall the name or find any info about it.

Structure: Members shouldn't be a HUGE problem because of operation outside of Blockland. All members should generally be active. Make SURE you have a clan thread so people know what you're doing. Organise your members into classifications, such as Modelers, Programmers, Mappers, etc. Try creating big group project addons every once in a while. Let members release their own mods titled under the clan name, this should attract more attention to the group. Make sure you make a thread discussing all addons you have released as well. Get fancy with the thread layout if you wish, add fancy decals, etc. It's not required but it's always neat to have.

Other types of Clans

I'll have more details for these types of clans eventually.

Vehicular Clans - Clans that are based off of the usage of Blockland vehicles, such as an Aviation clan, a Racing clan or even a Skiing clan.
Roleplay Clans - Clans that are based off Roleplaying in Blockland itself.
War/Deathmatch Clans - Clans that host deathmatches and battles every day and organise events for players to compete against eachother with weaponry and violence.
Film-Making Clans Clans that gather members to create cinematic movies on YouTube and other video websites for entertainment of other users.

You should link to Tom's guidelines, they were good as well.

Mack, I suggest a major revision/amendment to these guidelines.

Event clans should not exist. It is difficult and unproductive to have multiple people working on the same event project. Event clans have absolutely no purpose based on the structure of a clan that you previously describe. Which means essentially you're contradicting yourself.

Blockland is a game designed to be fun. You can make whatever clan you wish. I managed to pull of Blockintosh for the longest time and Icy is doing just fine with MicroBlock and so on. You can't tell people not to make this and not to make that because you're wrong.

Tom's guidelines were really biased, and they also tried to say that a Clan thread and a really fancy layout was NEEDED. which is wrong.

You've contradicted yourself again.

You say, "You can make whatever clan you wish."

However you just set a bunch of somewhat controversial guidelines to clans. I'm just judging eventing clans based on the guidelines you just set forward.

I was in blockintosh, and although it was fun being in a clan, we didn't create any group work. Everything evented was done individually, which completely ignores the common purpose of a clan. Therefore eventing clans accomplish nothing greater then a single person.
