It happens all the time.  Just watch any kind of video where there's some starfish in a public place trying to single out someone that happened to piss that person off and most of the time people around will intervene.

It doesn't take 6 months to become friends.  For you, maybe, but it wasn't that hard for me to make 10-20 new friends within the first few days in my freshman year.
