I'm not sure if you know this but all that skin you call an ear protruding from your head doesn't actually hear stuff. It's the stuff in the hole that the protruding skin surrounds that hears stuff.

This is why actual ear plugs go in your ear and not around them.

Ears help catch sound. Think of them as radar dishes.

EDIT: At my dads, we have a fancy wireless pair. Not all that stuff stuck on the sides. No wires. Just one you plug into your speakers. We have some rounded rectangle one thats red, I think it's Sony.

I also bought these so I can A.) Plug my lappy directly into my reciever. B.) So I have yet another 3mm extension cord. C.) So I can realize that my crappy phone still uses its speaker when my headphones are in. and D.) So I can listen to someone else's music without sharing an earbud.
