Author Topic: Questions about Pvp/Deatmatch/Dueling etc.  (Read 2348 times)

Hi, I am relatively new to Blockland. I used to play the Demo for hours on end until I broke down recently and finally bought the full version. I have RTB and know how to use it. I also Know how to install addons outside of RTB. I have only ever joined one game online.

That being said, You have a general idea of what I know.

Now to the questions.

Generally; how do people go about PvP?
I read some threads to see if I could learn a few things and I did, but it's still not eloquent enough to feel like I know what to do.

A client to interact?
I read something about needing to download a "client" to be able to interact. I'm not sure what this means. Is it an add-on or is the client something totally different? You can't actually "damage" players without this client?

Boundaries?
I also read that you can create boundaries to keep players "inside the build". Is there a special way to go about this or is it just "disable jetpack and build high walls"?

How to deal with trolls?
What precautions should I take to ensure that people don't intentionally sabotage and troll my dueling game? For instance; making sure that there is more than one spawn location discourages spawn kills. Information like that would save me a lot of rebuilding time.

If I wanted to host a PvP game, how should I go about it?
I've read things about dueling, slayer, and other things, but I'm not really sure how to go about it or what to choose. Do I download one of these mods [IE: Slayer] and use it and it will do the rest or what?

Caution- Boring speech below this line

When I played the demo for hours on end, I had the most fun building fortresses, dueling grounds, and such. It was such a bummer though because I urged to actually have some people to duel against on these builds. Even with only 150 blocks [Even less when I played years ago] I still managed to have fun building these.

Now I actually have the opportunity to put these "arena's" to use, so any help at all is much appreciated.

It all depends on the server.
RPGs tend to have restrictions on PVP, like needing to turn it on, level/nation requirements, etc.
If you want an instant battle, any TDM/DM server will do.
Most if not all servers that include fighting other players use server sided add-ons. Though it's not required, it's recommended.

A client to interact?

You must be referring to the Dueling server.
It's a lot more complicated than just fighting an opponent. Trust me.

Boundaries?

Brick walls and a ceiling will work just fine, as long as you don't include vehicles. (things like horses and cannons are okay.)

Just make the spawns invisible, and make a lot of them. Avoid 'class selectors' and you won't have many spawn killing issues. Players have an invincibility time when they first spawn.

The server sided part of the Dueling mod is private. You can't host that.
As for slayer, just download the add-on, enable it. When you start the game, and after you've spawned, press Esc and click Minigames.
Click the slayer button and all the settings are in there.

Now I am sort of confused. Is Slayer considered a "Server side add-on?". So as long as I just have Slayer and open the Slayer mini-game, I have all I need?

Oh... I'm more interested in a sort of all out battle between 2 or more people. I'd like to be able to do teams and such too.

It sounds like there is a well defined difference between Dueling and other forms of pvp.

Is there anything else? I figured there might be some ways [Loopholes maybe] that players can try to mess up your game... you sure there isn't anything else I need to know?

I was going to avoid player selectors anyways. It sounds too complex to start out with just yet.

How do you make spawns invisible? Or better yet, make blocks invisible period.

If you're hosting a server yes.

You would use Slayer for that.

Yes, because of the add-on system. Users can make their own add-ons which open a lot of possibilities.

Just try to keep walls and such (anything the player could go on) either touching the ceiling, or somewhat distant. Make sure you keep the 'raycasting' option on when doing your ceiling.

Use the wrench, and use the following settings:
Rendering: This determines whether or not you can see the brick.
Collision: This determines whether or not you (and vehicles) can touch the brick.
Raycasting: This determines whether or not projectiles and other 'raycasts' (usually from a script, possible to script them to ignore this setting) can touch the brick.

So if you want a spawn completely un-interactable but still make players spawn in them, just turn all 3 off.

Slayer is server sided. A client sided add-on is something that allows the user(client) to use it on any server. Like the default emotes are clientsided. Dpending on what you want, Slayer has different gamemodes. If you wanted a CTF, you would have to choose the CTF gamemode and place the correct bricks.

PvP usually just means 1 on 1. So, yes it would be dueling. Making a dueling match could be done with events, or just having only 2 people being able to join the server. Centhra's Dueling is a add-on, and private.

What do you mean by "messing up the game"? Spawnkilling is a key problem, for one. That and camping in places that will make it impossible for the other team to move. These can usually be solved by 2 seperate exits to the spawn, or an invisible wall.

You can turn rendering off, and then if you want people to go through it, you can turn collision off. If you want bullets to go through it, turn raycasting off. Or, if you have Truenos colorset, you can use the invisible paint can.

forget. Spent all that time too.

Okay, I started a "server" to test my "DM" in progress and I am running into one issue.

- Even though I unchecked Jet Pack on the add-ons, I can still jet pack around. Is that because I am Admin? How do I disable that for even myself?

Also, does anyone want join my Deathmatch to help me test and get it in working order? That would be really great.

Jetpack isn't an item.

Each playertype has a 'canjet' property. Use the No-Jet playertype.

Also, when you finally understand how DM/TDM and such work, start taking some time to learn how to balance teams/weapon sets. If you ever need help on making classes just pm me or ask here.

Thanks everyone, but I'm still having the Jet Pack issue... I need more specifics.

I tried checking the Player_No_Jet_Pack and it still didn't work.

Do I need to DL an actual No Jet Pack player class?

My DM is called Desert DM... pass is 111

In the slayer settings, you need to change the player datablock to no jet player

Alright.... thanks to a player named RedGaijin, I got the jetpack problem fixed.

I also made sure my spawns work well.

I need some people to actually test my DM now. Any takers?
