Author Topic: Car audio systems.  (Read 504 times)

Im not at all sure how helpful this forum will be when it comes to stuff like this, but its worth a shot I suppose.

As some of you may know, I recently got a '98 Chevy Malibu. I love it, but one thing about it is I think it could be time for a new audio system. Im not sure if it already has an aftermarket system in it, but if its not up loud it puts out some decent bass but you can tell its been used heavily by previous owners. I wanted to look into possibly getting some sort of new speakers for it. The stereo itself is fine, its a JVC CD player. I just want some new speakers but have no idea where to begin. I don't need subs or amps or anything like that.

Has anyone got any info with stuff like this? How much might it cost? What should I be looking for?

Check the speakers, you might be able to save some, but if the paper starts to rot in them, they're junk.

How many speakers are in there already? What physical size are they? They should be 6" by 9" in the back and 6" round in the front, although there are strange sizes, for example one of my cars has 6" by 8"s, in both the front and the back.

Also, what model head unit is it (the CD player part)? It'd be nice to know the wattage that it can output.

Im not at all sure of the sizes in the front, they don't appear to be big at all though. The rear deck appears to have 6 x 8 or 9. According to an Ask.com site, they're 4x6 and 6x9, looks about right to me. The head unit is a 180W.

180w x4 or 180w total RMS?

I bought some nice Pioneers for 110-130 for a pair. I don't remember the diameters of each, but yours should be in that range.

It all depends on your budget. I recently replaced all the speakers in my car as well as the stereo. I installed two 6 1/1" Kicker speakers in the front and two 6x9" kickers in the back. Kicker is a reletively good brand and the end result sounds amazing. But with high end speakers, a stereo, and professional installation it cost me about $600.

Here is the topic I made:

My friend has two 12" subs in the back of his car. I have one picture to post the result.
