Any kind of knife that is illegal is illegal to have in public. You can own any knife legally if you keep it in your house.

knife buffs really annoy me for some reason

But I do really want to buy some old medieval, roman, ancient greek, etc. swords and other weaponry.

Switchblades are because they are opened with a spring. Butterfly knives are only illegal if you open it with centripetal force (aka, spinning) and not by hand.

I have a butterfly knife, but it's pretty stuffty.  I was going to buy a Benchmade 42 but I was like, "Naaaaah," and got a Freebord.

I have a BM42, it's lovey and I love it even though I suck with it.

Also,
Just to help all of this confusion, butterfly knives are illegal in some places to own PERIOD, while other places aren't. But yes they are most normally illegal to carry outside your house, as they are considered to be concealed blades.
