Author Topic: Overclocking problem - 50c on idle  (Read 1723 times)

Oh cool, how 2 overclock?

I don't know how you guys all manage this.
One of my machines runs a crappy first gen Phenom triple core.
I've unlocked the 4th core and overclocked from 2.3GHz to 3.6GHz and still only get 55 to 60C on a stability test with the stock standard heatsink and fan.
Anyway, my general rule of thumb for modern a modern CPU is no more than 70C on full load. Modern GPUs can stand about 90 to 100C depending on the model/age.

my GPU goes up to 90 C under load. im just gonna run it till it drops then buy a newer one.
That's not too bad for a GPU.
Edit: Currently semi-idle (firefox is all) at 36C

I'm mad at my computer.  When I first got this laptop, it could play anything no problem.  Now, suddenly after about six months for whatever reason, it idles at about 60 on loving powersave mode and will shut down due to overheating within about a minute of starting any game.  I am trying literally everything to cool it, but even now it is running at about 72 degrees and I only have the internet and blockland up.

Nexus is sad.

Tear it apart and clean the dust out of the fans.

I've read about Overclocking, Sounds useful. 'Specially with my 1GHz Processor. How2OverClockLappy?

yeah have fun with your leg warmer if you try that ..

Fifty degrees celcius on idle? Jesus christ, call the fire department!

:I

and that's a pretty good overclock if your maxing out at full load at 75C.
I installed a heatsink on my Phenom X4 and overclocked it to 3.6GHz and I get 20c idle, and on full load it has never met past 50c
Amazing heatsink

Pretty much anywhere above 70c is pretty hot.  You should start getting worried if you're hitting upwards of 95c or more.

Mine idles around 50c and up to maybe 65c on high load.

I wish my computer could withstand 203 degrees farenheight.

Nope.
Most CPUs should not exceed 70C or so.
95C would be potentially lethal for your CPU, if your BIOS hasn't already kicked in at 80C to turn off your computer before major damage.

Ok so I tried opening up my laptop to clean the fans.

I am pretty sure I just voided my warranty on it and now its idling at 71 degrees on power save mode with no programs running (besides my temperature monitor).
aaaaaaaa.....

This is what I get for getting a too good to be true deal on a high end gaming laptop.
