Author Topic: Need at MAX $600 build  (Read 1690 times)

I checked your prices and the cheapest reasonable 1 GB geforce 460 was $170 from MSI, which is $340 for 2 cards. Conversely, the best AMD phenom II x4 for the price is the black edition at $130.  So that right there is $470. Now you have $130 for all other parts. This is completely unreasonable for a case, RAM, an HDD, a motherboard and a power supply.

Now realistically, getting 2 460's is pretty cost ineffective. You can get a card that is essentially 2 460's stuck together into one card for $385, but its still not that useful. Getting multiple graphics cards is pretty useless if you're getting the cheapest possible mobo, cpu, and 4GB of RAM, and your computer would honestly be a lot better if you just got 1 card and invested the money into other stuff.

Honestly, $600 is really tough to hit for a gaming computer, and basically I managed to hit $870 with the flexibility to work down. It would REALLY work out if you could somehow reuse your old HDD and case (which would bring you down to $710, and from there you could cut the ram from 8GB to 4GB to save $25 or maybe get a slightly lower end mobo for saving $40. If you did that, you would be down to $655, which is slightly over, but I'm guessing is doable.

If you want some help, go ahead and PM me or something and I'll help you out.

Props to Greekgeeker for helping me out work out this build.

Damnit I strikes a deal to get the cards and Phenom for 300

Ah, that changes some stuff. If you really need to hit $600, that's your best offer.

The only thing I really recommend to change is to get a more solid power supply. While I'm sure Raidmax is a perfectly legitimate company, having a PSU that is $25 below a Cooler Master of 50W less seems a little off. And while it indeed costs a bit more, as someone who has had a power supply explode on me, I would strongly recommend you go for the Cooler Master.

If you want, you might want to bump up your ram to 8GB as well.

I already got my stuff all up to 660. So it doesn't have to be exactly on the 600 mark.

And I can't reuse case/HDD, since I have to give it to my brother.

Please don't recommend something if you don't know what the forget you are talking about.
That's an INTEL motherboard. He wants an AMD processor. As well as many other things. forget.

I just now woke up.

I had a brain-fart when I made that post, due to being awake for 32 hours. Calm down.

Good. It's all coming together, huahaha.

yeah but i don't know when I'll get it. My dad is going to pay for like half of it, and he told me to give him the config and he will buy the exact config later on. Could be in like 5 years. :c

By then all these deals will be gone.

I'd suggest that ram, if he can infact use the rebates.
However, the PSU I recommended is quite a bit cheaper, and is modular, and still great quality. OCZ make awesome products.

I don't use rebates man. D:

EDIT:

Here's something I came up with:

That doesn't support SLI dude.
My motherboard I suggested is the cheapest AMD motherboard to support SLI.
Also I wouldn't buy a Rosewill PSU for SLI setups where quality and reliability are key.

I thught the board supported sli because it has 2 pcie slots.

Also the rosewill has been recommended a lot for my build

AMD only started supporting SLI technology with their latest chipsets, 970, 990X and 990FX.
That has an 870 chipset which means you'd only support one of the cards even with the SLI bridge on.

I wish people would stop posting those stupid picture guides that aren't even that good.

Crap, that puts me at 700. Any ideas to lower the price?

At the very minimum you'll want a high quality 650w. You'll need to spend about $90 to get a PSU capable of supporting your needs without loving itself over. Seriously.

You don't need to get the hyper 212+. It will only make your computer harder to build and you will not benefit from it as the stock cooler is more than adequate. As Ethan said, that motherboard doesn't support sli.

Here: There is a $10 promo on the case and a $25 rebate on the psu. If you don't use rebates then tough stuff; you'll need more money. If you cheap out on the PSU then it will die and other components will likely die as well. Don't buy some stuffty offbrand one for $60.

The CPU overclocked to 3.7 GHz, with the SLI 460s and at full load, requires 600W. I don't need more than that.

It's not the wattage; very rarely, a PSU will support the wattage it is rated at. Cheaper ones tend to be worse, I remember a case where a 600W was only outputting 380W to 410W peak.

Righteous, do you believe the one I recommended would be enough? I think it would. They usually make good products, and that rebate is insane, but he can't do that.
