Server has --- ping sometimes

How come my server has --- ping sometimes, even though people can still connect. Oh wait, I just had an epiphany; every time the first person connects it lags. After that is a ping applied to my server?

If you are behind a firewall people will not be able to ping it. But they will be able to join it. In other words, don't worry about it unless people can't play on your server.
