If you're saying they should work for the money then you could just put them to work in the mining industry.
Trade the John Deere for a Komatsu.
My dad was in scouts and he said they did things like, learn to hunt. Get yourself out of traps. Clean and operate firearms. Build tree houses. And even fight dogs. Apparently if you a dog is about to attack you, you wrap your shirt around your arm and bait the dog into biting it, and right before it bites your arm you kick the dog really hard. If you forget up and he gets you, your shirt is wrapped around your arm so the dog won't be drawing blood and he won't let go either, so you can take your time to deliver a kick that'll knock the wind out of em.
My friend in scouts said they do things like take hikes. Learn to identify plants and birds. And how to whittle little pointless things outta wood.
