What a waste. I would've reverse traced his IP, and forgeted with him.
Judging by the sounds of it, he's not very experienced and probably wasn't using a VPN/Proxy.

I said it might not get rid of the virus and that you should do that if nothing else works.
Just check if the virus is still there after the reformat.
It could've spread itself on the other partition or it could've been a rootkit.
You're most likely safe though.
