Purple metro is obviously trolling you, what you're experiencing is either a bug, or an option that is currently turned off

Click the gear at the bottom of the main gui, scroll all the way down to notifications.

The sound for people joining a server is the same as the sound for receiving a message at the moment. I'll be fixing it in 4.01.
