A lot of people? But that's the worst possible example. MW3 is literally like a MW2 expansion, so of course people are going to move on to possibly finish the story as well.

But people still play Cod4, WAW, and MW2.

Exactly how was it better?
The feel of the game.
The second one added too much. The new infected were too many. The day maps didn't have the same eerie "lost" feel as the night ones. It turned from a relatively scary game to what felt like an arcade game, where you just compete for points.

And I guess the characters also helped set the scene.
