You know what they say. I don't know how to put it scientifically or in the right words but, we've all heard about the chemical reaction or the neurons firing like crazy in the brain when somebody dies (or something like that). Maybe he tripped.

He probably just said it because he knew he was about to die or it hurt or something. Kind of like when something scares you and you just have to catch your breath, often you'll find yourself saying something over and over in disbelief (oh wow, oh man, oh my gosh, etc.)
