Author Topic: House to vote on affirming ‘In God We Trust’ as national motto  (Read 9235 times)

Nothing in or representing our government should involve religion, and yes god involves religion.

The churches would be all over us if our motto was "There is no god but there is freedom!!!!!11"

It took me 5 minutes to realize I didn't say the word "intelligence" and you were complimenting my words. :U
It took me until I read that which you have just now stated to realise that.

I shall raise a new church of the flying spaghetti monster!
Yes! Many will oppose you, but remain faithful!

Believe it or not, Separation of church and state does not exist in the constitution. The only place it ever exists is in a letter the only non-christian founding father wrote (by founding father I mean those who helped form/sign the declaration of independence). Thomas Jefferson. And even he would be shocked by how America is today (as far as religion goes.) The U.S.A was founded a Christian country, on Christian standards and morals. The Bible was originally inspiration for how America would run. At one time, in God we did trust. And America's religious origin seems important to me, and even if I was atheist, I would not want to omit God from America's history. (Or in this case, it's motto.)

Also, even if Separation of church and state was in the constitution, it's separation of church and state. Not from.
All this means is that America can't be like some areas where the church basically runs the country.
Also if America was founded on atheistic standards by mostly atheists, and that was the original motto, then I'd just have to live with it. But even so, that is a lot more offensive then "in God we trust." <that is just a statement, which at the time was mostly true, what you suggested is saying that all other religions are wrong.

Who cares if seperation of church in state was in the constitution its still a widely held value

And yeah saying all religions are wrong is just as offensive as saying theyre all right

It seems like "In God We Trust" is just an American statement and doesn't really mean anything about religion.

why cant the motto be something not about religon

Did you read? All Separation of Church and state says is that we can't run like some places used to where the church basically was the government. What people think of it today as, is only a value held by some atheists, a minority in America.

Also, "In God we trust" does not say there is a god. It's only saying that the founding fathers believed in God, and trusted him. The phrase does not claim that they're right and opposing religions are wrong.

Last time I checked, tribal starfishs couldn't put up a legitimate argument.
are mondays black?

yes?

well, there's your answer as to why they're bad plain and simple

separation of church and state
not everyone believes in a single god and this country is founded on everyone being equal
this is a bad idea
representative dudes supporting this are dumb
I'm fairly certain that the entire American government, or close to, is made up of christians. Non-christians don't get elected much because the majority of the voting populace is christian.

So it's not surprising that people support it.

And separation of church and state mostly applies to taxes and stuff.
