Author Topic: My school's administration is stupid when it comes to running Mac networks.  (Read 3973 times)

My school is somewhat protected
They have all of the usual sites like Facebook and Youtube blocked in my school, but all the ones I use are unblocked.

On a computer related note, my school runs like 3 different versions of Windows. There's 7 on the teacher computers, the ones in the Computer Class room, and on the Laptops we get every so often. There's XP in the computer lab computers, and pretty much every other computer in the school exept for the Library, which runs Windows Server 2003 edition.

Moreover, there is no protection on the High School network, only on the Elementary network (and its password is extremely easy to guess and is even taped onto the back of some teacher's laptops).

Moreover, none of the computers in the computer lab have a password.

I also doubt they changed the password on the router, so it'd be really easy to change some things in the network remotely.

Wow.  I didn't even know that still exists.

Also, there are no site-blocking measures in the network nor are there any measures to check what's being typed as far as I know.

The only measure that exists as far as that goes is history, which can obviously be erased easily.

And I also think they literally duct-taped the router to the wall in the teacher work room.

lol

my school is the only one with a decent security system in place. And a decent network, if I even try to screw with some stuff, they can nail down the EXACT computer that did it and I will get a detention, possibly a suspension.

Also, the networking doesn't even work.

By no means can you do anything with any other computer on the network, which somewhat defeats the purpose of a network. It's like there's no network in the first place, the way it is.

My school is pretty stupid about that stuff. They have a Student and Teacher profile on every student mac. The student which is limited abilities has no password but the teacher profile that has admin abilities does. So I decided to guess the password and I got it on the first try. Right there BAM admin abilities, password stealing and plenty of other stuff. We have "computer teachers" in our computer lab and they barely know stuff on running a computer especially a mac which pretty much anyone can use

Where I used to live, the entire school system (Excluding the college) was under the same network.

that could be potentially bad, but they were smart to securely lock it. There have been several hacker attacks, but the most they did was interfere with the e-mail system and just break it.

They knew what they were doing, too. Save you could get to files on all the computers fairly easily.

They had an overprotective site blocker, though; likewise, they also had extreme measures to make sure students didn't go searching or looking at bad stuff.

I'm going to try changing someone's school computer password with control panel. (Can you change windows xp passwords with it?)

If you are an administrator and it isn't on an AD domain. Thus, it's possible on home computers, or for school admins, but not for you.

Ok thanks, I'm the computer geek at my school (elementary school) and wouldn't want to fail on teaching that dumbass that doesn't log off a lesson.

I seriously doubt this.

Your school is obviously dumb for using macs in the first place...
Honestly, Macs are better for schools.
And anyway, the PCs they get are always old stuffty ones.

my school is pretty good at blocking stuff. they blocked browser minecraft from running without disabling java or the website. schools really shouldn't use macs, they are too user friendly. kids need to learn how to deal with the tough stuff before they get to slack off in the shiny world of mac.
